BABGOC (Bali, 26th June 2008) - The Bali Asian Beach Games and the OCA (Olympic Council of Asia) hasconfirmed the demonstration sports for the first Asian Beach Games. Beach Water-polo and Beach Basketball will be introduced at the inaugural Beach Games with hopes for attracting enough interest to be possibly included in future beach games.
Demonstration sports were introduced at the summer Olympics in Sweden in 1912. They are not a requirement at any games but they do help with launching new sport disciplines to becoming official sports in subsequent editions of the Games. Traditionally, the medals awarded for the demonstration events followed the same design as the Games medals but of a smaller size. These medals, however, are never included in the medal count.
